According to Sky Sports Germany, Maximilian Wöber is set to complete a move to FC Schalke 04 imminently.

The 28-year-old will has had his contract with Leeds United terminated and is already in Austria, where he has been training individually at Schalke's pre-season camp after being left out of Leeds' travelling squad for their pre-season tour of the United States. Earlier today, Wöber successfully completed his medical and is now expected to sign a performance-based contract with the German club.

Wöber spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen but made just four appearances due to persistent injury problems. Since initially leaving Leeds on loan in 2023, the Austrian defender has struggled to re-establish himself at Elland Road.

The centre-back joined Leeds United in January 2023 in an attempt to help the club avoid relegation from the Premier League. He made 19 appearances during the second half of the campaign, but Leeds were ultimately relegated to the Championship. Following the drop, Wöber activated a loan clause in his contract and spent the 2023/24 season away from the club.

He returned to Leeds ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, primarily serving as a squad player, making nine appearances as Daniel Farke's side won the Championship title and secured promotion back to the Premier League. With his departure now imminent, Wöber's three-and-a-half-year association with Leeds United appears to be coming to an end.
